Queen Elizabeth II loves horse racing. In fact, since 1988, she’s made over $9 million dollars in race purses from her own horses she’s entered into races. Because of the global Covid crisis, not many people were able to attend live horse racing events in 2020. But with immunizations on the rise and cases down, those of us back in the United States just might get to see these thoroughbreds in action in 2021.

If you’re unfamiliar with the American horse racing scene, the article below details our most famous three competitions, referred to as the Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown is the highest honor for a racing horse. Only the best of the best reach Triple Crown status. To win the Triple Crown, a horse must win all three legs or jewels in the series. This means they must win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. This year a few select and premier horses have a shot to win the Triple Crown. If one can pull it off, it will be only the third Triple Crown winner in the last 40+ years.

Triple Crown History

In 1919, Sir Barton became the first horse to win all three races. However, the term “Triple Crown” wasn’t used until 1930 when Gallant Fox won. Since 1919, only 13 horses have ever attained the lofty title of being a Triple Crown winner. Some of the most infamous winners included War Admiral, Citation, and Secretariat. The last Triple Crown winner was Justify in 2018.

The Three Jewels of the Triple Crown

The Kentucky Derby

This is the first jewel in the series, and it has been called the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” This derby is a popular one full of parties and revelry. It is the first step towards winning the crown. This year’s “Run for the Roses” will take place in Churchill Downs on May 1, 2021.

The Preakness Stakes

The second jewel in the series is the Preakness Stakes, and it is the shortest leg in the racing series for the Crown. This is when the racing series moves from Kentucky to Maryland. Here the horses will race for the title at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. This year’s race will be held on May 15, 2021.

The Belmont Stakes

If a horse wins both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes becomes the final race to win the coveted Triple Crown. It is the oldest of all Triple Crown races, and it occurs at Belmont Park in New York. This year’s race will take place on June 5, 2021.

Want to Attend the Triple Crown Races?

If you want to attend the Triple Crown races this year, there is still a chance. Due to COVID-19, the track will be running at 40-50% capacity in its grandstand. There will be certain protocols in place to prevent the spread of the virus, but viewers can still expect a fun and exciting race. As of now, masks are required to attend the Kentucky Derby in May, but each racing track will operate within guidance and recommendations from the CDC, as well as state and local health officials.

You can purchase tickets through the Kentucky Derby official ticket resale site at kentuckyderby.com/resale or through their official experience package partner at derbyexperiences.com.

If you want tickets to the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes, you can keep an eye on their websites for more information. A limited number of tickets will go on sale to the public in April 2021.
